Will a sitemap help my web-sites search engine position?

Yes and no. It won't directly improve your websites' positioning, but it will enable you to help Google and Yahoo to understand and reflect your websites in the way you want them understood and reflected, and that will help.

Can I use a high priority in my sitemap to elevate my websites' positioning?

You can, but it won't help. The web-site page priorities are internal, relative priorities by which you tell Google which are the more important (and less important) pages on your website.

Is there any easy way to work out page change frequency?

By setting the default page change frequency to the special value "auto", sitemap.module will work out a suitable frequency for each page based on the date/time when it was last updated.

Can I use the same sitemap for Google and Yahoo?

Yes; both now use XML-based sitemaps, conforming to the same standard.
